Qualcomm gave fans a glimpse of what will be powering their next smartphone last week with the US company launching its next-generation .

This state of the art chip is the firm’s most advanced to date and will offer a swathe of improvements to many of the upcoming flagship Android phones.

Samsung and OnePlus have already made a commitment to the 855 and you can expect many smartphone manufacturers to follow with their own announcements in the coming months.

So, if you want to know how the 855 will change your next device here’s what new about this flagship processor.

THE SNAPDRAGON 855 WILL MAKE YOUR NEXT PHONE SO MUCH FASTER

Every year we see major bumps in smartphone performance but Qualcomm is boasting that the Snapdragon 855 could bring one of the biggest upgrades in years.

In fact, users of the new 855 chip could see a 45 percent improvement coming to their next Android device.

Similar to Apple’s new A12 Bionic brains, the new 855 uses a 7 nanometer process with this CPU including a total of eight cores.

And that’s not all as graphics could also be 20 percent faster thanks to the latest Adreno 640 GPU.

Qualcomm says the gaming experiences using Adreno graphics will achieve a new level of realism with through support of Vulkan 1.1, high dynamic range and physically based rendering.

GETTING ONLINE WILL BE INFINITELY QUICKER

5G continues to be buzzword at the moment and the Snapdragon 855 is one of the first processors that will help make this technology become a reality.

Many UK operators including EE, Vodafone and O2 have made a commitment to 5G and users will begin seeing huge improvements as early as next year.

5G could offer speeds of up to 1Gbps which would allow mobile devices to download a full HD movie in around 40 seconds.

It’s worth noting that 5G ready smartphones will be more expensive so Qualcomm’s 855 chip will ship with the non-5G X24 modem as standard.

However, this modem can be upgraded by manufacturers to the X50 which will then allow 5G to be accessed.

“As operators launch 5G networks in early 2019, consumers will for the first time be able to take advantage of transformative 5G consumer experiences on mobile devices with Snapdragon 855,” said Alex Katouzian, senior vice president and general manager, mobile, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

“We are proud to share our technology inventions and be among the first to bring mobile 5G to the world.”

Along with fast 5G speeds, the 855 can also access faster Wi-Fi with it fully capable of transferring data at up to 10Gbps – at this speed a movie would take just five seconds to download.

YOUR CAMERA WILL GET BETTER

It may seem odd that a processor can make your camera better but Qualcomm is making big claims about the 855 and its photography credentials.

The firm says that the 855 sets new standards for capturing stunning photos and videos.

Qualcomm’s latest technology integrates numerous hardware accelerated computer vision capabilities to provide cutting-edge computational photography and video capture features while at the same time offering up to 4x power savings.

Hardware-based depth sensing also enables video capture, object classification, and object segmentation all in real-time in 4K HDR at 60fps.

This means a user can capture a video and accurately replace selected objects or backgrounds in the scene in real-time all with 4K HDR resolution using over one billion shades of colour.

The chip can also support video recording using HDR10+, so the more than one billion shades of colour can be captured with exceptional contrast.

Finally, in order to efficiently store this amazing content, Snapdragon 855 adds hardware acceleration for HEIF file format encoding, reducing file sizes by 50 percent for efficiently saving and sending user-generated content.

END OF THAT REAR FINGERPRINT SCANNER?

We’ve never been fans of rear fingerprint scanner but with consumers wanting all-screen smartphones this is where many manufacturers have been forced to place this security feature.

Some firms, including OnePlus, have begun embedding fingerprint scanners under their displays but this technology is still in its infancy and is yet to appear on the majority of devices.

However, that might soon change.

The Snapdragon 855 is the first mobile platform to support the new Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor, the world’s first commercial ultrasonic fingerprint solution supported under the display.

This is the only mobile solution that can accurately detect fingerprints through numerous contaminants.

Furthermore, this technology enables sleek, cutting-edge form factors while distinguishing itself from alternatives with higher levels of security and accuracy.

YOUR BATTERY LIFE SHOULD BE IMPROVED

Like most new processors the Snapdragon 855 is expected to be much more efficient meaning improved battery performance for devices that use it.

Qualcomm has officially confirmed that its Snapdragon 855 will offer users “long-lasting battery life” but we’ll have to wait and see just how much better it is once flagship phones begin hitting the market next year.
